E-learning solution moodle, installation and customization
Moodle is an open-source e-learning software platform used by many Research Institutions, Universities, Online School, etc.
It allows teachers to easily create and manage on-line courses(create assignments, create quizzes, grade students, etc). Moodle is used by many institutions around the world: http://moodle.org/sites/

Moodle overview

Creation of a course by a teacher
Add a course in Moodle

A teacher can set different options for a course:
  • Name of the course.
  • Summary text.
  • Course starting date.
  • Availability of registration to the course for students (from when to when)
  • etc.
It is also possible to copy a course curriculum from a precedent session/year. This can save a teacher a lot of time and headaches!

Moodle Quizzes

If you have worries such as "A 50 minutes course is probably not enough for my students to understand the lesson...". Moodle lets you create small quizzes to test your students understanding.
Creating problems with Moodle is extremely simple and doesn't take much of your time.
Online quiz scores are calculated automatically after the students sends their answers. This allows you to quickly judge of your students comprehension.

Types of quiz questions

Standard question types

Calculated question
Calculated questions offer a way to create individual numerical questions by the use of wildcards that are substituted with individual values when the quiz is taken.
Essay question
In response to a question (that may include an image) the respondent writes an answer in essay format.
Matching question
A list of sub-questions is provided, along with a list of answers. The respondent must "match" the correct answers with each question.
Multiple Choice question
In response to a question (that may include a image) the respondent chooses from multiple answers. There are two types of multiple choice questions - single answer and multiple answer.
Short Answer question
In response to a question (that may include a image), the respondent types a word or phrase. There may several possible correct answers, with different grades. Answers may or may not be sensitive to case.
Numerical question
From the student perspective, a numerical question looks just like a short-answer question. The difference is that numerical answers are allowed to have an accepted error. This allows a continuous range of answers to be set.
True/False question
In response to a question (that may include a image), the respondent selects from two options: True or False.

For more detailed information on question types visit the Moodle documentation site.

Third-party question types

Beside the standard question types, some third parties have created specialized question plugin.
Drag and drop question
This type of question is similar to the matching question, but lets the user use his mouse to select, drag and drop the matching elements. This type of question can be quite useful when testing small children.

Example of a drag and drop question

Molecule design question
The Java Molecular Editor question type allows you to ask students to design and submit a molecular structure.
Your own special question type
Solacom can help you create new type of question that is still not yet developed.

Here is an example of a question type that we have created for a Technical College:

Integration with embedded software programming simulation tools.
Creation of programming question type that allows students to send programming code segment that are compiled at real time by a software simulation tool (AVR studio). The executable code is run and the output compared with the output of the teacher's solution.
